Sounds like a dream? I thought so too, until I learned it wasn’t.
It might surprise you to learn that my first successful business partnership ended at the worst possible time…
We had just grown our business from ZERO to $1.2 million in 9 months and the sky was the limit.🚀
I was a few months into finally seeing money from all of our efforts show up in my bank account instead of just reinvesting everything back into the business.
My wife had joined our team 6 months prior, so it’s easy to see; I was “All In.” ♠
Everything that I had worked so hard for all of my life was in my grasp.
My future was rolling out exactly according to plan.
The villain of my story entered the frame.
The cause of this tragedy? Strategic Misalignment.
The reason for our speedy success was our big ideas, my partner’s “pedal to the metal” internal drive, and my unique ability to figure out how it all works, even if I’d never done it before.
Our strategy for that meteoric growth was to go from idea to implementation as fast as possible.⚡
The problem came when we started growing our team to meet our growth strategy.
In Q4 of that year, we hosted our first-ever quarterly retreat in Big Sky, Montana. A place where the stars are so bright, they feel within reach…
Also, there’s nothing else around, so it’s a perfect place to hole up and strategize.
The outcome of the retreat was a feisty disagreement between my partner and the other TEN team members.😖
The team knew that we were at the breaking point and had no more capacity to grow until they were given a chance to build the systems and processes necessary to grow at scale.
My partner believed that everyone just needed to pull more hours and “get it done” while continuing at a breakneck pace.
The team would win this battle, but the war was just starting…
Within one month of implementing the agreed-upon plan of action, my partner was pushing completely different initiatives.
This is when the cracks began to rupture…
After 4 more months of the team working their absolute asses off, we did a huge launch that we had once again bet everything on…
The launch was a colossal failure.📉
We only hit 40% of our sales goal.
Our profit from the launch was next to nothing.
And worst of all, our team was broken.💔
The next quarterly retreat in Austin, TX would be our last.
The dam had burst and we were all drowning.
The strategic misalignment inside the leadership team and the team as a whole was so corrupt, there was no saving it.
Within one month of grueling mediation, I sold the failing business to my partner, and by the end of that year, 10 out of 12 members of the team quit.
